The Giving Stump: When Purpose Risks Sustainability.

I first learned about Shel Silverstein's "Giving Tree" during reading time at my children's elementary school. For those who don't know, the poem tells the story of a tree that selflessly provides for a boy throughout his life, offering everything from apples and branches to its very trunk until all that remains is a stump.

Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree" is a beloved children's story, but it also serves as a poignant metaphor for the delicate balance between purpose and profitability in the business world. We often celebrate purpose-driven companies, those that prioritize mission over mere profit. But what happens when that purpose becomes so consuming that it leads to self-depletion, leaving only a "giving stump"?

Apple Tree

The tree in Silverstein's tale gives without reservation, offering apples, branches, and its very trunk to fulfill the boy's evolving needs. This mirrors businesses that pour every available resource into their mission, sometimes at the expense of their own financial health. Initially, like the tree with its bountiful apples, these businesses seem to thrive, fueled by passion and a desire to make a difference.

However, as the boy's demands increase, we witness the gradual depletion of the tree. This reflects the resource strain that can plague purpose-driven ventures. Each act of giving, while noble, erodes the foundation, pushing the business closer to an unsustainable model. The initial abundance gives way to a slow, methodical stripping away vital resources.

The final image of the stump is a stark reminder of the ultimate sacrifice. It represents a business that has given everything to its mission, leaving nothing for itself. While the intention is admirable, the result is a state of exhaustion, an empty foundation that can no longer sustain itself.

This "giving stump" scenario highlights a crucial paradox: how a pure, uncompromising focus on purpose can lead to the depletion of the very entity that seeks to serve that purpose.

The lesson here is not to abandon purpose, but to approach it with a sense of sustainable resource management. True, lasting impact requires a business model that can endure and balance its mission with its own viability. Just as a tree needs roots to grow, a purpose-driven company needs a solid foundation to thrive. Otherwise, we risk creating a landscape of well-intentioned stumps, remnants of businesses that gave too much, too quickly, and ultimately, gave themselves away.

The challenge lies in finding the harmony between a powerful mission and a sustainable financial model. It's about recognizing that long-term impact requires longevity and a balanced approach to purpose and profit.

I understand these challenges. I've seen countless purpose-driven individuals struggle to align their actions with their values.

So, how can we strive to create businesses that give generously without becoming just stumps? My proposal is simple: Shift your mindset and reimagine your actions towards sustainability, abundance, and collaboration.

Shift Your Mindset: From Scarcity to Stewardship

The "giving stump" mentality often stems from a scarcity mindset, the belief that resources are limited and competition is fierce. Instead, adopt a mindset of stewardship. This means viewing your business as a caretaker of resources, both internal and external.

  • Focus on building a sustainable financial model that ensures your vision can be achieved, and not on maximizing short-term goals only.

  • Prioritize positive relationships, from business partners to employees and volunteers, that align with your mission, stewardship, and long-term vision.

  • Nurture your new mindset with goal-tracking apps, books, workshops, podcasts, and training that will ensure your business's long-term viability.

Reimagine Your Actions: Implement Five Universal Principles to Achieve Your Purpose.

Instead of a "give it all away" model, embrace strategic resource management and financial sustainability practices grounded in powerful universal principles. This is the core of my coaching program, "Reimagined Action," where I guide entrepreneurs in building purpose-driven, profitable businesses. These principles are:

  • Law of Karma: This principle emphasizes the law of cause and effect. In business, this translates to operating with integrity, creating value for your customers, and aligning your actions with ethical practices. When you do so, you attract positive outcomes and build a sustainable business.

  • The Law of Abundance teaches us to shift from a scarcity mindset to one of limitless possibilities. For entrepreneurs, this means recognizing the abundance of opportunities and resources available to them and leveraging them to grow their business.

  • Law of Thought: This principle highlights the power of your thoughts in shaping your reality. As a leader, cultivating positive and empowering thoughts allows you to create a culture of innovation and success within your organization.

  • The law of Assumption focuses on the power of belief. In marketing, for example, understanding your ideal customer and assuming they are already interested in your solution allows you to craft compelling messages that resonate deeply with their needs.

  • The law of Attraction suggests that you attract what you are. By aligning your business with your values and purpose, you attract customers and partners who share your vision, creating a powerful network of support and collaboration.

By shifting our mindset and reimagining our actions through principles like those in my "Reimagined Action Program," we can create businesses that give generously without sacrificing their own sustainability.

We can build a future where purpose and profit coexist in harmony, creating a world of abundance and lasting impact instead of a field of depleted stumps.
